Fake News

Consider the source and supporting sources

Always do a search for at least one other source that states the same information. Most news (if it's not deliberate disinformation or misinformation) will get coverage from various news groups. It shouldn't be hard to find the information you originally found in various sites and from opposing news outlets.

Read beyond (beware of clickbait)

Clickbait is content on the internet whose main purpose is to attract attention and encourage visitors to click on a link to a particular web page. Don't read a headline and assume it's true. Always read the article in full. If the headline doesn't quite fit the article content, then consider it 'clickbait' and move on.

Check the author

Find out who the author is with a quick Google search. If the author is not an expert in the field, are they a journalist? If they are a journalist, what news organization(s) do they write for? Are those news organizations considered trusted sources? Do the news organizations lean left or right? Are they considered trustworthy by centrists and moderates?

Is it a joke?

Look out for content that is meant to be farcical, ironic, or purposely fake in order to prove a point. The Onion is a good example of a website that writes 'fake news' articles that are not represented as being true.

Check the pub. date

It's always important to know when an article was published as currency can provide important context. If you can't easily find the publication date, consider this a red flag and move on.

Ask an expert

The Librarians at SCC can teach you research and critical thinking skills that will help you navigate the Web and use best practices to determine if an article contains disinformation, misinformation, and what type of bias you can expect from the author and news organization that published the content.

To contact a librarian come to the reference desk or use the Online Reference Chat Service available from the SCC Library Homepage.
