Who Is Considered a First Generation College Student?

There is sometimes confusion surrounding how literal the label "first-generation college student" is meant to be. This definition, from UCLA, is expansive. If you meet any of these criteria, please do not be afraid to ask for extra help navigating higher education!

You are considered first-generation if you identify with the following:

  • Your parent(s) have not completed a four-year degree in the U.S.
  • Your parent(s) went to a trade school.
  • Your parent(s) went to a community college and took classes.
  • Your parent(s) went to a community college and have an Associate’s degree.
  • Only one of your parent(s) graduated from a four-year institution.
  • Your sibling(s) graduated from a four-year university, but one or both of your parents have not.
  • Your parent(s) received a four-year degree in another country.
  • Your grandparent(s) has a four-year degree, but no one in your immediate family has completed a four-year degree in the U.S.
